Shading for a roof window

Roof windows can receive strong sunlight, so shading may be needed to control daylight, glare and summer overheating. Internal roller blinds and Venetian blinds mainly adjust light inside the room, while external shutters and awnings intercept sunlight before it reaches the glazing. The best option depends on the window model, required darkness, access for operation and budget. External shading can reduce solar heat gain, but it does not block every source of heat or automatically provide certified burglary protection. This guide compares the main options and explains why compatibility with the particular roof window matters.

Types of roof-window shading

The main options are internal roller blinds, internal Venetian blinds, external roller shutters and external awnings. Consider what you want to achieve before selecting a system.

Internal Venetian blinds

Adjustable slats let you change the amount and direction of incoming light quickly. They can be an affordable decorative feature, although cleaning them may be awkward on a high window.

Internal roller blinds

These are generally a simple, economical option. Fixing may use screws or other manufacturer-approved fittings. Depending on the fabric, they can dim or darken a room. Some double-layer designs offer different levels of light transmission.

Internal blinds are less effective at limiting solar heat gain than shading outside the glass, because absorbed heat remains within the room. Alongside universal products, window manufacturers offer blinds designed for specific window models.

External roof-window shutters

External shutters can darken a room and improve comfort by reducing sunlight reaching the glazing. They do not stop all heat entering a home. Their performance depends on the complete window-and-shutter system.

Electrical control from a wall switch or remote is useful when windows are difficult to reach. Some compatible systems use solar power, avoiding an additional mains cable.

A shutter may add a physical barrier, but burglary resistance should only be claimed where supported by the specific product’s classification. Do not assume every external shutter is a security shutter.

Products supplied for the exact window model help ensure a proper fit. Check compatibility before choosing a universal alternative.

External awnings

An external awning places a fabric screen in front of the window. Fabrics with different light transmission allow the level of shading to be matched to the location. Awnings can cost less than external shutters and help reduce solar heat gain while admitting some daylight. Manual and electrically operated models are available.

Choose compatible accessories

Insect screens are another useful summer accessory for roof windows. Consider ordering the window and its accessories together. Matching blinds or awnings to the manufacturer’s specified window model helps avoid fitting and operation problems. Confirm compatibility, control method and the functions you actually need before purchasing.
