XPS roof-insulation boards

At a glance

XPS roof-insulation thickness should be selected for the complete roof assembly and its required performance. XPS is extruded polystyrene, distinct from expanded polystyrene insulation, and is supplied as rigid boards in different grades and dimensions. No single thickness is best for every roof. This guide considers climate, roof type, thermal targets, cost and installation details, while separating insulation performance from waterproofing and acoustics. It explains why a thicker board alone cannot guarantee freedom from moisture damage, noise or overheating, and why the exact product data and design remain the basis for a suitable choice.

What XPS thickness changes

For a given declared thermal conductivity, greater insulation thickness increases the layer’s thermal resistance. Whole-roof performance also depends on joints, bridges and the other layers. Thickness alone does not determine acoustic performance or protect the structure from every moisture source.

XPS boards are relatively light, rigid products, not highly elastic sheets. Their declared water absorption, compressive behaviour and intended application vary by grade. Boards can be cut to fit, but gaps, support and the specified arrangement still matter.

The source mentioned thicknesses starting at 20 mm. That is an example of market formats, not a minimum suitable roof-insulation thickness. Climate can influence the required performance, but cannot replace calculation of the actual roof assembly.

Six factors to assess

  • Local climate: consider the heating and cooling conditions used in the building assessment.
  • Roof type: a flat, inverted or pitched roof may require different products and layer arrangements. Confirm that the chosen XPS is intended for that application.
  • Energy requirements: establish the current requirements applicable to the building and check the complete roof, not only board thickness.
  • Cost: compare the installed cost with a project-specific estimate of energy effects. Savings and payback are not fixed by thickness alone.
  • Technical advice: a competent designer can assess product data, thermal bridges, moisture conditions and detailing together.
  • Building use: internal temperature, humidity, loads and acoustic requirements may affect the overall design.

Benefits and their limits

Appropriate insulation can reduce heat transfer and support indoor comfort. It cannot by itself eliminate every instance of overheating or cold rooms.

A grade’s moisture resistance does not replace a waterproofing system or proper drainage. Acoustic improvement must be assessed for the assembly; XPS is not automatically a sound-absorbing treatment. A thicker board also does not by itself prove greater compressive strength or a longer service life.

Specify the product and the complete roof

Agree the required thermal performance, XPS grade, thickness, layer arrangement, loads and moisture details before ordering. Check the product declaration and installation guidance for the intended roof.

A considered choice can support energy efficiency and comfort in a new building or renovation. The long-term result depends on suitable materials, accurate installation and the rest of the roof, rather than a universal thickness recommendation.
