What is ETICS – External Thermal Insulation Composite System

An External Thermal Insulation Composite System (ETICS) is the most widely used method for insulating external walls in Europe.
It involves permanently attaching an insulation layer (traditionally made of EPS or mineral wool) to the outer wall, then covering it with adhesive mortar reinforced with fiberglass mesh, and finally applying a decorative render.

ETICS is defined and described in ETAG 004 – “Guideline for European Technical Approval of External Thermal Insulation Composite Systems with Rendering”, which was later replaced by EAD 040083-00-0404 (European Assessment Document).
In Europe, the corresponding standards EN 13499 (for EPS-based systems) and EN 13500 (for mineral wool-based systems) also apply.

These documents specify:

performance requirements for system components (boards, mortars, renders),

methods for testing durability, adhesion, and weather resistance,

principles for the assembly and installation of the complete system.
