Insulation boards and building thermal performance

At a glance

Insulation can reduce avoidable heat loss when the material, thickness, junctions and installation suit the building. These four decisions work together: buying a high-performance board cannot compensate for an unplanned junction or poor fitting. This guide explains how to compare products, determine thickness, distinguish air leakage from thermal bridges and organise installation. It corrects the idea that a larger building automatically needs thicker insulation and that a board alone guarantees lower bills. Heating costs also depend on the rest of the envelope, ventilation, heating efficiency, energy prices and the way the building is used.

1. Choose documented, suitable materials

Compare the declared thermal performance and the requirements of the actual application. Loading, moisture, fire behaviour, compatibility and durability can matter as much as conductivity. The highest price or a general quality claim does not establish suitability.

Insulation helps limit heat transfer in winter and summer, but summer comfort also depends on solar gains, ventilation and the complete building.

2. Calculate the required thickness

Thickness depends on conductivity, the existing layers, target thermal performance and the particular element. A larger floor area does not automatically require a thicker insulation board.

The guide to choosing insulation-board thickness provides related context. Assess the complete wall, roof or floor rather than selecting thickness by building size alone.

3. Address gaps and air leakage

Inspect window and door junctions, service penetrations and connections between building elements. Use compatible tapes, seals or foams for the particular function. Do not seal required ventilation openings.

An infrared thermometer can show local surface temperatures, but it does not by itself diagnose every air leak or thermal bridge. Suitable survey conditions and interpretation are needed; more detailed testing may be appropriate.

4. Plan competent installation

A clear specification and suitable skills help produce consistent work. Professional involvement can be valuable for difficult junctions, moisture assessment, fire details and safe access, but a contractor’s presence is not an automatic guarantee of quality.

Check substrates, material condition, fixings, joints and protective layers before the work is covered. Record any departures from the design and resolve them deliberately.

Understand thermal bridges

Thermal bridges are parts of the envelope where geometry or material arrangements create increased heat flow. Common locations include wall-to-roof junctions, openings and structural connections. They are not the same as holes through which air leaks.

Colder internal surfaces can raise condensation and mould risk under particular indoor conditions. Heating, ventilation and moisture sources also matter.

Plan continuity of insulation and air-control layers, and use appropriate junction details. No board shape or tongue-and-groove joint eliminates every thermal bridge across a building.

Select boards as part of the whole solution

SteelProfil offers insulation products for different applications. Compare the exact board declarations, available dimensions and required system details rather than relying on a claim that every product meets the highest possible standard.

Accurate joints and suitable materials can support a continuous thermal layer. Openings, fixings, supports and adjoining constructions still need attention.

Before ordering, agree the required thickness, quantity, installation method and treatment of difficult connections. A properly designed improvement can reduce energy use and improve comfort, but the saving must be assessed for the real building. No insulation board alone guarantees zero heat loss or a fixed reduction in bills.
